PERPS MARKETS & COSTS

Stock and commodity exposure without ownership

Distinguish price-linked derivatives from shares, bullion, and physical delivery.

THE IDEA TO TAKE WITH YOU

A stock ticker on a perp is not a share certificate.

Exposure is not ownership

A stock-linked perp is a derivative tied to a price reference. It does not itself grant shares, voting rights, or the ability to receive and transfer the underlying stock. A commodity-linked perp does not itself deliver gold, oil, or another physical asset.

The exact reference matters. An oil contract might track a particular benchmark rather than the price of fuel at a local pump. A familiar label does not eliminate basis risk.

Trading hours can differ

A derivative can trade while its underlying market is closed. That does not guarantee uninterrupted liquidity or a continuously updating reference. During closures, the perp price can reflect expectations that differ from the next official market opening.

For a weekend or overnight trade, inspect depth, spread, oracle behavior, and the market’s operating rules. Around-the-clock access does not mean around-the-clock price certainty.

Handle corporate and benchmark events

Stock splits, distributions, contract rolls, and unusual market events can matter to a derivative’s reference. Consult the particular market specification instead of assuming a broker-style adjustment.

Only consider markets shown as available in HYPE. The set of listed contracts can change, and this guide is not a list of currently supported stocks or commodities.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Why references matter

A gold-linked derivative and physical coins may respond to the same broad gold price, but coin premiums and storage costs can move independently. A hedge in one does not guarantee an exact offset in the other.
